Spanish American War Cartoons

The Spanish American War was taken place in 1898, which resulted in the Treaty of Paris causing the control of Cuba towards the US, and the freedom of colonized countries from Spain. Propaganda was used in the Spanish American War, which is misleading information to promote a political view. At the same time Yellow Journalism was used, which is a journal that is based on crude exaggeration.

Uncle Sam drags US ships to Cuba
- Uncle Sam, the United States government, brings it's ships to Cuba, which means it's there to protect and liberate the country from Spain.

Being shot to Spain
-A citizen of Cuba, or governor is shot back into Spain, because if they can't follow the rules of the United States, than they would have to leave moving back to Spain. 

The Americans give a way to the Filipinos.
-The United States is describing the Filipinos as a savage race, in which the US provides a way into a more civilized life, an american life.

Muckrakers

Progressive Era- 1890s to 1920s a time period where there were many political reforms and social activism.
Muckrakers- names given by President Theodore Roosevelt that are journalist that try to show the political corruption with in the government and any other place that needs reform.

Upton Sinclair
- Focused on the Chicago Meat factory, the conditions placed upon the people. Wrote "The Jungle"


Lincoln Steffens
- Created the book, "The Shame of the Cities." Focused on corrupted political power in the cities.

Ida Tarbell
- Book, "The History of the Standard Oil Company." Focused on the corrupt oil company, Standard oil.



Jacob Riis
- Book "The Battle with the Slum," Wrote this to focus on the poor conditions of the streets of Manhattan.

Edwin Markham
-Poem "The Man with the Hoe," Wrote about the cruelty of labor.
