Prohibition

From 1920-1933, the United States ban the consumption, distribution, and production of alcoholic beverages. This time period was known as Prohibition. People during the time risked what they had in order to consume alcohol, and even to sell it for profit. Bootleggers were people who illegally sold alcoholic beverages during the Prohibition. Speakeasies were areas, where they illegally sold these drinks for high profit. During this era people took advantage of the opportunity to make a huge profit.

Al Capone captured. He took control of the Prohibition era, making huge profits.

Wayne Bidwell Wheeler, a Prohibitionist, created the Anti- Saloon League.

William Hale Thompson, with the help of Al Capone, won his election as Chicago Mayor.

War Horse

The Movie takes place in England during 1914-1918, the time of World War 1. The Protagonist is actually the horse name, Joey, along side with a teenager named Albert. Joey was bought from a bidding, by his father, and was suppose to be a horse meant for labor, a plow horse. When the war started Albert's dad sold Joey to the military, as they needed money for their house. Joey is then brought to France, and was then placed into the hands of many armies. He has survived through the German army twice, while everyone else are him were dead, sacrificed in order to save him. He runs away from the German army when he was used a labor horse to drag an artillery up a steep hill. He gets tangle in barb wire when running from the gun shots, but instead runs into the fray. This is where the German army and the Allies had their temporary truce, in order to save Joey. In the end Joey is reunited with Albert, where it's Albert who saves Joey from execution.

Joey is being handed off to the army, while Albert is trying to stop them from taking him.

Dramatic
The actors were good in the movie, they portray a new sense of style when it comes to acting. Shows how well the horse is trained in order to perform all of his tasks. The music fits well with the story, as it plays well with the type of action that is being performed.

Cinematic
The music also fits into this category, as it sets up a feel of cinematic motion towards the viewer. One example shows how Joey watches Albert, this shows an emotional bond that is placed on to them. Another shows the Duck, where how emotionally attached it is to everyone around him.

The Spanish American War was taken place in 1898, which resulted in the Treaty of Paris causing the control of Cuba towards the US, and the freedom of colonized countries from Spain. Propaganda was used in the Spanish American War, which is misleading information to promote a political view. At the same time Yellow Journalism was used, which is a journal that is based on crude exaggeration.

Oil Boom

Discovery Oil Boom

Mining oil process in present day. This is where oil can be extracted from the sand, without burrowing deep into the earth. Oil is found mixed in the sand, where in large amounts will equal a little less than an oil reservoir.
Prudhoe Bay Alaska, America's largest oil reserve.

Mining Process in the 1900's. A simple drill down to the earth, until oil is struck, and the build up of pressure will release the oil. Many injuries occur from the high pressure oil that is released.

Impact
The oil industry boomed with the founding of surplus oil. Oil prices dropped, inventions now contribute from oil, and technology increased. Henry Ford created the first assembly made automobile, which helped create a vast empire of cars for everyone to buy. The prices of cars dropped to about 3 month pay of work, in order to buy one. Everyone was able to own cars due to the mass production of automobiles from Henry Ford.

Oil in present day helped create many new inventions that support modern day life. The long term effects of oil helped brought up new ideas on the production of oil.

The United States is decreasing their oil consumption.

United States imports the most oil in the world, with 6.6 million barrels a day, while China imports 6.2 million a day.
Did you know Oil is used to make these Products too?

  1. Soap
  2. Perfumes
  3. Lipstick
